Rod Building Course

The New England Fly Tyers is offering a rod building class for beginners.  An instructor will show you all the basic procedures in custom rod building and help you build a rod.  Classes are designed for who have little to no experience in rod building.  Class size will be limited to insure plenty of personal attention.

Some of the techniques you will learn include:

  • Selecting the right blank and components
  • Finding the Spline
  • Installing cork and reel seat
  • Guide placement
  • Attaching tips
  • Thread wrapping
  • Applying clear finish

This course takes approximately 3 to 4 nights to complete depending on the class size and the number of questions asked during the class.  The course will also help you in fixing a broken tip or rod component on existing rods.

The cost for this class is $25.00 for non-members and free for NEFT members plus the cost of the rod and components desired.

The component list is:

  • Rod Blank
  • Grip
  • Reel Seat
  • Eyes and tip
  • Thread

Components can be purchased as a kit.  Details can be discussed with instructors at a NEFT meeting.

If you would like to sign up for the course, please download Rod Building Course Application here.  Print and complete the form.  The form can be mailed to the club P.O. Box or handed in at the Monday meeting...
